The Cure HMV Poster

This is my final version of the HMV poster. I have choose to keep to the traditional layout of the poster from the "my inspiration" collection which is has been a very successful thing for HMV it is a great way of getting the band noticed.

my album cover

My album includes two images that were used in my production. I feel that it works well to fit within in the genre. Even though the images used on the original album were simple i felt making it more interesting would help make it look more appealing to my target audience.

Evaluation

To make sure i know what was good and bad about my media production I will be doing a review on my work. The four questions are:

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop, or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

2) How effective is the combination of your main product and the ancillary texts?

3) What have we learned from audience feedback?

4) How have i used media technologies in the constructions and research. Planning and evaluation stages?

The answers:

1) My media product has has kept to the codes and conventions seen in other products. But for some parts I have tried to develop and gave the video and album my own stamp.

The song I have used is a post punk record. A lot of videos for this genre usually have a band themed video or try to put over a political point across. This was especially true the Thatcher years were many people in Britain. This established a lot of working class bands and a lot of songs aimed at the government. But in my video i have preferred to use more of a narrative based theme. This is because this the kind of music video that i like as i think it makes the song more appealing to the audience and it could help bring a bigger audience into the video and the internet is a big plus.

This is one of shots of the band performing this is a typical medium shot.

The shots i used have used are conventional but i have used some experimental shots that i thought would work well within the video. At the start i have used a lot of close up shots and fast editing within the genre of the song this is quite rare as they prefer using more long shots and medium shots. The shot with the close up of the fret of the guitar is used more in the rock genre but i think that it works well the whole feel of fast paced music in the song.

With my album cover i have tried to use a conventional layout for it. This is because i feel this works better as it is more custom to what real bands do and i didn't want to the risk of making something really fancy and complex and finding out that it didn't work well so i thought it would be best to keep to the traditional way. So with my album i haven't tried to change the codes and conventions of real media products.

2) I feel that the combination of my main product and axillary texts work quite well together. I feel that the HMV posters and the album cover would help sell the record and the video is quite emotive and works well.

The reason i have tried to make a emotive video for my song is because i feel with the meaning of the lyrics about how men can be sometimes quite hard with their feelings and that when something tragic has happened to someone its ok to cry. So in my video i have made it for a while we don't know what is properly going on i have made so we just think that the young man is late for a date with this young women. But as we get closer to the the end of the song we can finally see that he is late for a funeral and we see the emotion at the end of the song when he starts putting the flowers down on the floor and walking away.

With my album cover i have used the images of the flowers on the back cover and the picture of Leroy quite dark on the front to contrast the colours of light on the back and dark on the front. This goes well because it reflects the soft music in the song and the dark meaning of the death of a loved one. I used images from my production as i thought it would work well and i have spent time editing them and changing them around and with the font i have used the white and dark which is also contrasting.

Then with my poster i have got an image from the band when they first come out i thought this work well because it looks really effective and goes well with the real products used in the my inspiration posters.

3) With my audience feedback i have found out a lot of what i could improve but overall i was pleased with the results i got.

I found that people got the meaning of the video straight away. This was pleasing to hear because i was worried that people would not get it because i had made a few mistakes on the editing so this was one positive. I then found out that people wanted to see a bit more editing within the video which i knew i should of if i wanted to do make a better music video but i found without doing it that my media production has worked better as i think it works just as good with less effects in it. But i found that people felt the band shots i had used was quite poor lighting and i felt this too but the place i got was last minute due to people cancelling on me. Also thought some of the band shots were a bit out of frame which i can see now i looked back.

With my print artefacts people liked the back cover i had used which was good for me cause i had worked hard on the back cover and it was something i was really pleased about. My hmv poster could of been improved a lot with people saying i could of put more on it like price of the album etc but i didn't want to over do it.

If i was going to do it again i would listen to things about improving my editing skills and putting more special effects in it and then i would also take my care in my blog work and planning skills and as i felt i had rushed my production a lot.

4) This year in media I have used a range of media products and technologies. The first technology i used was the camera to film my production on. Without knowing how to use this my production would of had a lot of set backs because it would of took my a few days to get used to the camera and the DV tapes. But because of the experience i gained last year i knew pretty much straight away what i was doing as i knew what mistakes to avoid from last year that cost me marks.

Once i had got all my filming done it was time i edit the production using Final Cut Pro. Even though i had used this before it took me a while to get used to it again as a lot of the things i did last year i forgot about so it took me a few lessons of using the star wars trailer as an example to get used to all the features again. Once i got the hang of it i felt comfortable using it as i felt that i got on with my editing well. I found out news effects and transitions this year that i never knew about last year and i feel that if i knew about it back then i would of been able to improve my grade quite drastically. For print artifacts i used pages and photo shop to create my album and HMV posters to help go along with the production. I have also used things like making freeze frames from my time line, uploading mp3s onto my work and making titles for my song. log and capturing.

Other technology that i have used is the Internet. This is using things such as my blog where i have kept a record of all my production work and kept track of what ive been doing also uploading images and videos on to it. On this i have done things like using Google to find images to help go with my print artifacts, lyrics to songs and found images to help gain knowledge of existing products. I have also used youtube to help me watch videos of the different genres.

Role Allocation

I am working as a individual so i will be an auteur.

An auteur theory was made in the 1950s and it reflects the directors personal creation vision. A famous auteur is the director James Whale from the early horror movies from the 1930s. He was famous for films such as Frankenstein, the old dark house and the invisible man. He was born in Dudley in 1889. He realized he had a passion for drama when he became a British officer in the army and was a prisoner of war. In the film Frankenstein he was very ahead of his times and it was one controversial scene in which the monster throws a young girl into the water and she drowns. This is bad now a days and to an audience in 1930 this was an outrage but this is what he wanted and he got his own way. He was brought back to do the bride of Frankenstein and wanted full control and a hidden gay background is evident in the film. He killed himself in 1957 by drowning himself.

The word auteur came about when a bunch of movie critics said that it is important for a film to reflect the directors vision. This was a reflection on film directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Howard hawks.

Filming

For the band parts it will be filmed in my garage. it will help give a authentic and realistic part of the video as most band play in their garages at first and helps give the band a close bond with each other in the video. The props i will use for this part is a guitar, bass and drum kit. The band are all dressed in a casual dress.

The part of the female will be shot outside the cinema in Sutton as this is were she will be waiting for Leroy who is late. She doesn't have any props and is just dressed casual

Leroy will have a variety of different locations. The first one will be in my house and bedroom where he will leave to go on the date. His second will be in the arbo part in Walsall. Next location is the shopping centre in Walsall when he is getting the flowers. Then he meets charlie in the cinema. Then he is going towards to the church though Sutton town centre then the last location is at the graveyard. The props used in this part are the flowers that Leroy is taking to the date. He is dressed casual as well as you think he is heading for a date. He also uses a mobile when he is looking at the text.
